How does it work?

What’s included in the Ontario Fertility Program at Twig?

If you’ve been considering IVF, this funding could help reduce your out-of-pocket costs and make your fertility journey more accessible.

While OFP funding provides financial support, it’s important to be prepared for the additional costs that may come up during your treatment. Our team at Twig Fertility will walk you through every aspect of your care, so there are no surprises along the way.

Under the Ontario Fertility Program, eligible patients are entitled to funding that covers the core components of one IVF cycle, including:

  • Up to two attempts at cycle monitoring – This includes ultrasound and bloodwork to track your ovarian response and optimize timing of egg retrieval.
  • Fertilization, culture and freezing, including:
    • Conventional IVF or Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), if clinically indicated
    • Blastocyst culture
    • Embryo freezing
  • Fresh and frozen single embryo transfers – All embryo transfer cycles from embryos created from your funded egg retrieval or thaw.
  • Surgical sperm retrieval – For people who require surgical techniques to obtain sperm (i.e. PESA) to use for ICSI.

While the Ontario Fertility Program covers many key components of an IVF cycle, some costs are not included in the funding. These will need to be paid for privately, whether out of pocket or through employer-based benefits:

  • Fertility medications – Fertility drugs used for ovarian stimulation, trigger, luteal support or other parts of treatment.
  • Donor costsCosts related to the use of donor sperm or donor eggs, as well as costs related to required Health Canada screening of donors or gestational surrogates.
  • Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) – Genetic testing of embryos, either for aneuploidy screening or because of a known risk of passing on a heritable genetic disease.
  • Cryostorage – Storage fees for frozen embryos.
  • Shipping fees – The cost of transferring eggs, sperm, or embryos from another clinic.
  • Services for individuals without a valid Ontario health card
