IUl or intrauterine insemination is a commonly used fertility treatment where sperm is inserted directly into the uterus to increase the chances of fertilization. It can be beneficial for couples experiencing unexplained infertility, those with medical conditions such as endometriosis, sperm factors such as low count or motility, or for same sex couples.

Prior to the IUl procedure, your cycle will be monitored to detect the LH surge, which is your peak time for ovulation, through a variety of methods such as ovulation test kits, bloods or ultrasound.

Once it is determined that you are ready for the lUl procedure, sperm is collected and prepped in the lab to isolate healthy sperm for insemination. Sperm can be fresh of frozen and can come from your partner or a known or anonymous donor.

During the procedure, a thin flexible catheter is used to insert the sperm directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix and increasing chances of fertilization. This is considered a non-invasive procedure.

Post IUl treatment is the same as it would be for an intercourse cycle. You will be instructed to follow up with a pregnancy test in roughly 2 weeks and you may or may not, be given a prescription for progesterone supplementation.
